Our goal was to raise $100,000 , so that over 1,500 families would have clean, safe drinking water.

In August, Hurricane Katrina hit. Rotarians and clubs responded incredibly. Almost $100,000 was collected, with $50,000 earmarked to help Rotarians in the affected areas.
As a result, the money collected for the water project fell short of our goal. More importantly, we heard feedback from clubs that they wanted to receive foundation recognition credit ( Paul Harris) for their contributions.

This project has been a priority throughout the year for both myself and the Pure Water committee, led by Bruce Whear and Heidi Sawyer. Together, district rotarians and clubs have donated almost $40,000 to this project. With the assistance of Foundation Chair Keith Harris and Treasurer Bob Wood, we will be asking the Rotary Foundation to support a Major Grant, the first in our District in many years, so that we can reach our goal of $100,000.

As Governor, I have District Designated funds, which are based on clubs Annual Program Fund contributions, at my disposal. I have committed $30,000 or these funds to this project. This represents the single largest commitment to any project this year. The total project will be over $100,000, if approved by the Rotary Foundation. This will allow us to meet our goals, provide clean water for almost 1,500 families and provide foundation credits to your club for donations.

Working with Pure Water, we expect that the first batch of filters will be installed very soon after grant approval. Since it will span more than one Rotary year, both Governor Elect Donna and Governor Nominee Julia have pledged their full support.

Congratulations to all Rotarians and clubs who contributed to make this vision a reality this year.

Dave

Mel Gibson Donates $1 million to Rotary Foundation.

Mel Gibson gives Rotary $1 million for Mexico disaster recovery
By Vanessa Glavinksas and Vukoni Lupa-LasagaRotary International News
11 April 2006

While scouting locations for his film Apocalypto, Mel Gibson came upon a near — apocalyptic situation in southern Mexico: the aftermath of Hurricane Stan. The storm ripped through the states of Chiapas and Veracruz in October, killing 15 people and displacing 370,000, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Gibson met with Mexican President Vicente Fox and told him he would donate US$1 million to help families rebuild, with one condition: He would make the donation through The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

The Hollywood actor and director learned of Rotary from several of his relatives who had traveled with members of the Rotary Club of Tarzana Encino, California, USA, on medical missions to Central America. Gibson and his wife, Robyn, were impressed that The Rotary foundation had matched their family members' donation to participate. "The key in their minds [to] the money coming [through] Rotary is that they felt it would be responsibly handled," says Clare Short, of the Tarzana Encino club.

Following the Gibsons' donation, the Foundation has set up a hurricane disaster recovery committee, along the lines of similar national committees appointed after the South Asia tsunami, to oversee rebuilding efforts. Foundation Trustee Chair Frank J. Devlyn heads the committee, and Past RI Director Francisco Creo is serving as an adviser. Rotary clubs closest to the affected areas will help the committee identify people most in need of assistance.

Devlyn is in talks with a nongovernmental organization specializing in low-cost housing about help with rebuilding efforts. Through a cosponsorship, the Gibsons' funds could be matched and homes for disaster survivors built at nearly half the normal cost.

"The Mexican government is giving the land and the services, such as electricity and drainage, in this unique [collaboration]," says Devlyn. The government will also provide a new school and clinic near the planned homes. To give them a true feeling of ownership, beneficiaries of the low-cost homes will be asked to contribute a small amount, about 10 percent, of the commercial value of the homes.

Rotary's Public Image - from the Boston Globe

As we all know, public image is one of the key emphases of the Rotary year.

For all the great work that Rotary does, in every community around the world, so few people know about what we really do. Several months ago, I was talking about Rotary at a business networking meeting at the Ritz Ballroom. I talked about our work with Polio, Water and Literacy and I got the usual blank look. As I looked outside, I saw a Rotary sign for the Boston club meeting. When I pointed to the sign, they all said " Oh Yeah...I've seen those signs before".

Building awareness of the of the great work that we do as Rotarians is one of the foundations of growing our membership and ultimately, Service Above Self. Last evening, my daughter's Mom called me and told me that she saw something about Rotary in the Globe. As luck would have it, yesterday was recycling day and the paper was already gone. After a few stops this morning, I was able to track one down...it was worth the effort.

Rarely does Rotary get mentioned in the Globe...well, congratulations to President Paul Swanfeldt and the Burlington Rotary Club for a great effort in building Rotary awareness.

http://www.boston.com/sports/other_sports/boxing/articles/2006/03/23/burlington_singing_its_fight_song/

Click on the link to view the article.

Best

Dave

Who's the Best Service Above Self Tour Update

Thanks to all of you who responded to my challenge!

Here are the new tour dates so far:

Saugus - March 31st - Community Art Show - Evening
Swampscott - April 1st - Youth Leadership Workshop - All Day
Gloucester - April 1st - Senior Supper - Evening
Rockport - April 22nd - Highway Clean Up
West Roxbury - May 1st - Challenger Baseball League
Lynn - May 3rd Special Games 8:30AM
Lawrence - May 4th - Teacher of the Year Awards - Evening
Stoneham - May 16th - Senior Lunch 12:00

These are the Tour Dates Completed

Burlington - February 26th Senior Citizens Dinner Dance
Boston - March 1st - Lunch Rosies Place

I am still waiting to hear from more clubs….Don't let me off easy!

If you have a project..please invite me. To raise the additional $4,627 we decided to run a raffle with the winner receiving a one week trip to St. Kitts for two including airfare. My goal was to expose these children to the work of our foundation and create new ideas of how to better serve.

Today, I received this letter from the Early Act Chapter at the Phoenix School in Salem:

Thank you for inviting us to the World Peace Dinner. It was inspiring to talk to people who were also for peace....The best part of the dinner was listening to the presentation about ( microcredit) banks being built around the world. We like the idea because...it gives the families the money to do something they are interested in and to raise their own money. ...This inspired us to start our own bank . The goal of EarlyAct this year is to work more closely with Rotary and this might be a great opportunity to work together.

The letter was signed by the President and Vice President of the EarlyAct club.

Thank you, Phoenix School EarlyAct club for making my day!

Dave

Our Newest Interact Club - Manchester Essex!

Along with Interact Chair Kevin McKelvey, I am so pleased to announce our newest Interact Club - Manchester Essex!

Paul Sullivan, President and Debbie Marcus, were instrumental in getting this new club off the ground so quickly. To make sure that the club will be successful, four Rotarians have agreed to be be advisors to the club: PP Chris Costello, Denise Gluckert, Dave Peterson, and Debbie.

The kickoff was a great event, where Rotarians shared information about Interact, Rotary, Leadership and the Future. According to Debbie, their enthusiasm is high, and they are a great group!

They have started with almost 30 members and their officers are: President: Eric Aldrich, Vice President: Ethan Tieger, Secretary: Naomi Delphin, Treasurer: Jordan Evans, Directors at Large: Max Baun, Caroline Round. The club also has the following Committee Chairs which also sit on the Board: School Service, Community Service, Club Service, and International Service.

The advisors have made sure that they hit the ground running. They recently participated in the club's Chocolate and Jazz Concert event on 3/3/06 by helping with set-up , selling tickets, selling refreshments at intermission (as an Interact fundraiser), and by providing tours of the M-E World Peace & Understanding Library Collection in the high school during the pre-concert Chocolate Tasting.

Next, their first independent service project is an ambitious one. They are going to perform a School Service project - painting the high school gym. Truly, it needs it! They are quite excited about doing this, and it should be just the kind of high visibility & fun project to raise their profile in the high school.

If your club doesn't have an Interact Club consider starting one today. Drop an e mail to Interact Chair Kevin McKelvey (Kevin.B.McKelvey AT usace.army.mil ) He will be more than happy to help out!

Dave

Who's The Best?

One of the goals that our club Presidents set for themselves , consistent with our theme and motto for this year of Service Above Self, was to have 12 community service projects over this year, or an average of one per month.

After finishing my club visits in January, I decided to spend my remaining time as Governor months participating in 48 Service Projects, one for every club, between now and the end of June.

I am asking every Rotarian to please invite me to help out and participate. Based on the projects that I attend, I will be presenting a special award for the Best Service Project at our Conference and Celebration at the Cape Codder on May 19 - 21. To invite me, please send an e mail to rotary at candeos.com ( I spelled out the e mail to fool spammers replace "at" with the @ sign)

As I share in these clubs spirit of service, I'll share these projects with you:

Burlington - years, Burlington has held a Senior Citizens Dinner Dance. The club gathers over 200 area seniors and provides them a full turkey dinner, prepared by club members, with all of the fixings , ( including Roy's famous pickled beets). Every club member helps out with either setting up, greeting the guests, serving, dancing, or cleaning up. The Burlington High Interact club, as well as children of several of the Rotarians also pitch in. Rosie’s Place, a sanctuary for poor and homeless women, offers both emergency and long-term assistance to women who have nowhere else to turn. Established in 1974, Rosie’s Place is committed to welcoming each guest with respect and unconditional love. We served soup, tuna casserole and vegetables and saw a lot of smiles and happy faces on a very cold day.

Congratulations to Boston and Burlington for leading the way. Because of your generosity, $50,000 was raised to send to the two affected districts. If we add in other contributions to organizations like the Red Cross and Salvation Army, the total was over $100,000. Great Job!

When I was doing my club visits , at least 2 to 3 people per club approached me to see if we could organize a group of volunteers to roll up our sleeves and live our theme of Service Above Self. I mentioned that we would be organizing a mission in the spring.

I recently spoke to DG Don Chauvin and his relief coordinator Joe Hidalgo and they are now ready to accept volunteers to roll up their sleeves. and get to work.

We would either be going April 28 -May 4th or May 4th to May 11th, depending on the number of volunteers. Our plan is to try and stay with Rotarians, if possible, so our only expenses would be the flight down, which are running about $320.

Please announce this to your clubs this week and please send me an e mail by Friday February 24th with the number of people who would be interested.

I am scheduled to speak with Joe early next week and need to get him an estimate of how many people he will need to house.

The Rotarians of Louisiana and Mississippi need our help. A very complete and current folder of handouts was given out to all registrants. This was a huge hit with Rotarians and attendees commented on the immense value of the Grants Overview and workshop and very appreciative of the wealth of information from Candace Embling who joined us from Rotary International

One of our club presidents commented "I ABSOLUTELY had a good time at the Foundation Seminar. So did my folks. For the first time ever a couple of things have happened -- 1) there was a cogent explanation of how the foundation works and which types of grants go with which types of projects, and 2) someone from our club got interested in really promoting this grant business & is very excited about it. I'm very enthused about our emerging interest in both international projects and developing a closer cooperation with RI."

We also recognized several clubs for their outstanding support of the Rotary Foundation.

Many thanks to Donna Lee and her team for putting on a great event!

Ipswich Middle School - Making a Difference

During my visit to the Ipswich club last week, I sat with President Christina and President Elect Rick Korb, who is the Superintendent of Schools. He mentioned a project, supproted by their club, that their Middle School students did for Katrina.

Here is the synopsis of the write up that appeared on their website:

October 14th at 3PM a 53-foot truck backed up to the doors of the Middle School. For three weeks the students and the community had been collecting school uniforms and backpacks for 1,500 displaced students in three Mississippi Gulf schools—Pearl River in Carriere, Picayune in Picayune and Hancock Central in Kiln. We sent uniforms (chino pants and skirts, and polo shirts) sneakers, belts and underwear and sweatshirts and sweaters for winter. The more than 300 backpacks were stuffed with school supplies and notes of inspiration.

We also learned they had not been able to purchase textbooks in over 20 years. We sent them more than 400 texts including French, Spanish, Math, History and Literature.About 60 student and staff formed a “Conga Line” and loaded the 300 boxes in a record time of 23 minutes. A loud cheer went up when it was all done and a true sense of accomplishment spread through the crowd. The truck then made additional pickups in Hamilton and Swampscott and headed south.

Our motto here at Ipswich Middle School is “Making a difference starts here” and we know it did. Thank you, Ipswich.

Congratulations to Ipswich Rotary and the Ipswich Middle School for making a difference and having a great influence on the lives of those school children.

Dave

Katrina Update - October 24, 2005

Last week, I asked our Assistant Governors to check in with their Presidents to get a Katrina Relief update. As you know, we set a goal to raise $50,000 from our 47 clubs for Katrina Relief. Based on their update, we are well on our way towards that goal, but not there yet...

Several clubs have not yet designated where the monies that they raised will be sent. I know that there are many worthy organization that are helping out...Red Cross, United Way, Salvation Army. However, as you and your board and members are making your decision, I would ask that you consider this:

There are thousands of our fellow Rotarians in Mississippi and Louisiana who have lost their home, family members, businesses, livelihood....in a nutshell , everything. The family of one of our own Past District Governors lost their home and had their restaurants sustain heavy flood damage.

We will be donating 100% of the monies that we raise to the registered charitable foundations that the two affected districts have each set up.

While there are many general relief organizations helping out in New Orleans, these two foundations are one of the very few organizations that will use 100% the money to help Rotarians directly.

With these checks will also come a promise, In the next few months, we will organize a group of volunteers to travel to New Orleans to help the families of our fellow Rotarians.

I would like to wrap this effort up by October 31st. If you do decide to join the other clubs in our District in helping our fellow Rotarians, please send your checks, made payable to District 7930 Katrina Relief to

Mr. Robert Wood
Assistant Treasurer
11 Rainbow Ridge Way
Georgetown, Ma 01833

Thank You

Dave

Salem Inducts a New Member

Today, I visited with the Salem club and to my surprise , I helped induct newest member John Neely.

Congratulations to Salem Rotary and President Rich Eisner who have set a goal of plus 3 members this year and are well on their way.

In the picture from left to right are Bill Ives, myself, and new member John Neely

And Now for Something Completely Different

I will once again be appearing with the Pocket Big Band on October 23, 2005 from 6 - 10PM at the Chit Chat Lounge ( I play drums)

For those of you who were there this summer, the band is made up of some of the best players in the Northeast and its a honor to be asked to play with these guys. Well, little did I realize that I walked right into a Service Project.

Chelsea Rotarians, who had already raised over $1,100 for our District's Katrina Relief, wanted to do more. So they asked for pledges and did a walk from the Wyndham, where they meet, to Chelsea Center. Here we were interviewed by the local cable access TV station to promote a Telethon that Chelsea Rotary is helping with to raise money for Katrina Relief. Congratulations to Chelsea for a really great idea. It was also a lot of fun!

Dave

Rotary Day at the United Nations - November 5, 2005

Rotary Day at the United Nations will be on November 5, 2005. I got an e mail from Peter Beacham, president of the Rockport Rotary Club, to tell me that they have raised $4,000 to go to the affected Rotary Districts in Louisiana and Missisippi. Congratulations to Rockport for their dedication and leadership.

At my official visit last Thursday to the Haverhill Rotary club, President Michael Hart presented me with a check for $1,200 to be used for our Katrina relief efforts.

We have also received donations from many other clubs, which I will list in my next blog . Several clubs have chosen to make very generous contributions to other organizations, as well. Thank you to all Rotarians who have made helped out.

Best,

Dave

Governor's Update - September 2005

September 15, 2005

I hope all of you have enjoyed your summer...................our Rotary year will be over in a little more than 9 months, and we have a lot of work to do!

District Conference and Celebration - May 19-21, 2006 Cape Codder Resort

The conference committee met this evening and a lot of great fun ideas were exchanged. Chairperson Dana McIntyre and his team have promised one of the most fun, family friendly conferences ever. You will be hearing in the next few weeks from Dana and the committee on the next few weeks with the details. Please make sure you sign up early, this one will surely be a sellout!

Club Visits

Since my last update, I have visited Topsfield-Boxford-Middleton, Greater Salem, NH, East Boston and Revere ( joint meeting), Reading and Wilmington. Getting out and chatting with Rotarians about what is going on in their clubs and how they are making a difference in their communities is also the best part of being Governor.
Thanks also to DGN Donna Wayman, who is accompanying me and getting to meet her leadership team for next year.

Collaborative Water Project

Our collaborative water and literacy projects are gaining great momentum. Heidi Sawyer and the steering committee have made great progress and raised over $4,000 with their Duct Tape Regatta. We will be distributing a one page brochure to all of the clubs in the next few weeks and will be asking for their at that time. Our goal is to raise $150,000 between several districts and equip an entire city with filters. It’s a lofty goal, but I know that we can do it! We will also be looking for volunteers to travel to Honduras to install the filters. Stay Tuned!

Collaborative Literacy Project

Jim Edholm, president of the Lawrence club, has made tremendous progress so far. He has pulled together one of Rotary's Concentrated Language Encounter (CLE) experts, Ralph Hammond, and the literacy coordinator for the City of Lawrence and will be training a select group of trainers in the next month. These trainers will then train the Rotary volunteers. Lawrence has a waiting list of 1,500 people looking for literacy training and our goal is to get the waiting list down to zero! We will be looking for volunteers to be trained in October, so start thinking about two or three people in your club that can help out on this important project.

Foundation Seminar - SAVE the DATE

Our next event will be our foundation seminar, which will be held on October 19th from 7:30AM to 2:00 PM. Our foundation team promises yet another fun informative session on the Foundation, including an update on important changes . Please make sure you send everyone in your club to this important event. More details to come.

World Understanding and Peace Dinner - March 2, 2006 - SAVE THE DATE

Our World Understanding and Peace Dinner will be held on Thursday March 2, 2006 at the Danversport Yacht Club. I thought I would give you an update on some of the conversations that I have had recently with many Rotarians about how we can best help.

A couple of weeks ago, based on feedback from the club presidents, we decided that we would take up a collections during the month of September and add it to whatever funds the club would provide and send them directly to the two charitable foundations that have been established by my two counterparts in New Orleans and Mississippi, Don Chauvin and Noel Alford. Several clubs have collected thousands of dollars to support these efforts, and I want to thank the presidents and the Rotarians for their generosity.

Several have decided to collect money and send it to the Salvation Army and Red Cross. Both of these organization have done great work in these two areas. I want to also congratulate those clubs on their generosity as well.

For those clubs that are still deciding how they would like to proceed, I would ask that you consider this. Unlike other disasters that we have helped out with all over the world, there are thousands of our fellow Rotarians who have been wiped out by Katrina..their homes, businesses, families. They are in desperate need of help. I was told the other day about a Past District Governor, from our own district, whose family was decimated by Katrina.

My colleague, Don Chauvin , said in an e mail, "we will take what's left of our District and move on."

We need to focus on helping them out as well. More importantly, as Rotarians, we know that every dollar that we send there will go directly to help those in need.

I hope that we can raise $50,000 in the next few weeks to help these Rotarians and their families, as well as others in need in New Orleans and Mississippi.

I would also like to announce that as soon as the situation in New Orleans stabilizes, we will be sending a mission of volunteers to that area to rollup their sleeves and help out. Plans are in a very preliminary stage, and I will get you more details as they become available.

Thanks again for your efforts..
Best,

Dave

Katrina Relief Efforts

Hi All

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions and for your expressions of concern for the terrible tragedy in New Orleans and Mississippi.

While a couple of clubs have decided to support relief organizations directly, the majority believe that putting it directly in the hands of Rotarians in the affected areas was the best choice.
The consensus was that clubs will contribute monies directly, plus add collections from members over the next couple of weeks. The monies should be sent directly to Rotary clubs in the affected areas who will best know where the needs are.

Once you have collected, please send a check, payable to Rotary District 7930 Katrina Relief, to

Robert Wood
Assistant Treasurer - District 7930
11 Rainbow Ridge Way
Georgetown, MA 01833

I will then contact my fellow Governors in Louisiana and Mississippi to identify which clubs we should we sending the donations to.

It is times like these that we understand the importance of Rotary. Some want them channeled through RI, as we did with Tsunami Relief. My preference would be to present them directly to the Rotary Clubs of New Orleans and Gulfport Miss, who can then decide what deserving organizations should receive them

I would propose that we use the money collected for fines and happy dollars for the next two weeks, plus any additional amounts that your clubs would want to contribute and pull them together and send them to these clubs in the affected areas.

Since this is your clubs money, I would like to know how you want to proceed. I am traveling today and tomorrow, so send me your feedback / ideas by tomorrow evening and we can collectively make a decision on how to move forward in this important effort.

Regards

Dave

Update Summer 2005

Summer 2005

Congratulations on finishing your first month of Rotary Leadership in our Second Century! I hope you find this update informative and helpful to help you club have its best year ever.

2005 - 2006 President's Installation and Celebration

A great big hearty thank you to the almost 400 Rotarians and Guest who made our evening a great success. One of our focuses in our year is youth. I want to congratulate Tim Lawton, the Danvers High Chorus, my daughter Luciana, and every club president and Rotary leader for helping make our evening truly special. It was so much fun for me, my family and friends to share the evening with you. A group of die hards, led by Burlington Rotary, rang in the new Rotary year at 12:01AM…Thanks!

Club Visits
I visited Rockport , Manchester Essex, Beverly, Swampscott, Winthrop, Gloucester and North Andover since July 1st. The most enjoyable part of being Governor is getting and meeting all of the people who really make things happen in Rotary, the club members. Thanks to everyone for their hospitality.

We will be distributing a one page summary of our project starting in September and will be asking for club support at that time.

Membership Seminar

Our membership seminar and BBQ round up on August 3rd was a resounding success. Many thanks to DGN Julia Phelps and AG Jacquie Carson for the great format and content. The baseball theme was a home run and the over 90 Rotarians involved had a lot of fun, fellowship and took home a lot of new ideas on how to drive membership.

Enjoy the rest of the summer and great weather!

Best,

Dave

Rockport Installation

I had the pleasure today of visiting Rockport and installing the first set of officers as District Governor. They were a very fun group and the setting ( Emerson Inn) was spectacular. I was very impressed by how every single member was assigned to a committee and the assignments were on the back of the weekly agenda, so that responsibilities are clearly communicated.

Peter initiated a literacy project where instead of speaker gifts, they would send books to a local library in the speaker's name. One of the highlights for many of us was the Danvers Choir...thanks to Julia Phelps for her help.

As I said, there is a great spirit of service in our young people. Our job is to capture and nurture this spirit. During a training ride recently, I was just thinking that being a District Governor is like being on a roller coaster. For the two years you are getting ready, going up that big hill, preparing, anticipating……

At last month’s International Assembly, governors from all over the world got together to learn, share ideas and most importantly, be part of the unveiling of the best-kept secret in Rotary, the theme for the upcoming year.

I’ve been in the technology business for many years, and seen my share of confidential information. What’s amazing about the theme is that its unveiled on a Monday, and the vendors have everything imaginable with the theme emblazoned on it for sale that same day!

Considering the number of vendors who know the theme months in advance, its amazing that, given this day and age, it never gets “leaked”. Maybe we could use more Rotarians in today’s media.

The most interesting think about the theme for 2005 – 06 is that it is not really a secret at all.

President-Elect Carl Wilhelm, in his theme address said, “There is a new wind blowing in Rotary, and it is called continuity! Gone are the days when our organization went north one year, to the west the next, followed by east and, then, maybe north again. Our main direction must be the same for many years to come.”

How right he is! When a new theme is introduced, we spend a lot of time and effort learning about it and then figuring out how we can make it happen in our Rotary club.

This year, and it sounds like perhaps for the next few years, we won’t have to spend any valuable time doing this. That’s because in 2005 – 06, Rotary’s theme is something that Rotarians around the world practice every day. It has been our motto and our mission for many years. This year’s theme is powerful, because it shows the world how our involvement in Rotary is different from any other organization.

We say it every day in our Rotary lives, but never stop to think

The theme for 2005 - 2006…Service Above Self.

I’m looking forward to the ride with all of you next year!

Dave

PETS Wrap Up

Well, its Sunday evening and for a change did nothing most of the day. PETS was exhilirating. It was great to get together will all of our club presidents and see their enthusiam and excitement. I already have gotten a half a dozen e mails saying they just cant wait for their year to begin....I share all of your enthusiam and excitement.

We had a great meeting on Saturday. Despite dire predictions of weather armaggeddon (the way the weather folks talk, you would think we lived in Florida whenever its about to snow.), we all focused on setting our membership goals, foundation goals, and came up with three ideas each for a group water and literacy project. Here is a quick update.

Membership. Carl Wilhelm wanted us to commit to plus one member per club. That would be 47 new members net. We still have a few more clubs to tally, but so far, our New Centurions stepped up to the plate and committed to
141 net members growth !

Foundation - Again, with a few clubs needing a little more time to finalize their goals, 35 clubs have committed to a goal of almost $200,000! Great work everyone.

Our next event is the District Assembly - Wednesday April 13th, 2005 at the Sheraton Danvers. We have an exciting program for everyone, and look forward to seeing you all there. To register, please let your club president elect know.

Thanks!

Update from PETS

Well, this is the first time I was able to catch my breath since Anaheim. As registration chair , my team and I were responsible for 625 people attending PETS. Needless to say, it was a lot of work and a lot of fun..like most things in Rotary.

Last night, all of our Presidents arrived in Nashua and today they dove right in. Every president I spoke with was absolutely energized by all of the learning, fellowship and new ideas they got today. This afternoon, we all met, for the third time as a group, to hear RI President Carl-Wilhelm's theme address and start to roll our sleeves up to start to plan our path for next year. We had a wonderful working session together...

We had our cocktail reception and kudos to Assitant Governor for Events Jacqui Carson, Conference Chair Dana McIntyre and AG Bruce Whear for putting together an incredible beach party at the Sheraton, including a Tiki Bar, Lei's and 1500 Pounds of beach sand....Past RI President Rick King visited our beach bar ( photos to come)

We heard some incredible talks from Dave Linnett RI Director, Frank Wargo, PDG and Past RI President Rick King. For many of the presidents, these were the highlight of the day. During Rick's speech, our beach party, Christina Harriss PE of the Ipswich club, and Ron Daubach, PE of the Greater Georgetown all got mentions. He first discussed how the Rotary Foundation touches so many lives. Since its inception the Rotary Foundation has:

• Sponsored 37,000 and $429 million for Ambassadorial Scholars to study in foreign countries
• Sponsored 11,000 GSE teams with 48,000 members on one month cultural exchanges
• Provided $71 million in 3H Grants ( Health Humanity)
• Contributed over $570 million to Polio eradication
• Funded over 20,000 matching grant programs
• Rotary and its partners have immunized over 2 Billion children since 1985

Over the next year, you will hear more from the beneficiaries of these programs and how the Rotary foundation has touched their lives…

This afternoon, we had lunch with the President-Elect Carl-Wilhelm and his wife Monica. I was very fortunate to sit at his table and he shared with us how much he and his wife love New England. Maybe we can get him to come visit us.

Now for the news….PP Carlo shared with us that after a meeting with the World Health Organization, the CDC and others…he has some wonderful news. They have confirmed that they will reach the last child by the end of 2005!

Thanks to everyone for their support to make this happen

Dave

Youth Exchange

Today, we had an inspiring talk about Youth Exchange, a program that is very close to President Elect Carl-Wilhelm, and a major focus for next year. (Carl was a former RI coordinator for Youth Exchange.) It was an impassioned speech about how, if we could have youth in every country in the world, participate in youth exchange, we would have no more wars.

I realized that we have been missing out on a tremendous opportunity the past few years. I have asked Wilson Lee, past president of the Boston Rotary Club, to serve as next year’s Youth Exchange chair. I'm confident that Wilson’s passion for Rotary, his enthusiasm and his leadership will create a Youth Exchange program that we can all participate in and be proud of. You’ll hear more from Wilson at PETS

See you soon

Dave

Theme Postcard

For those of you who get way too much mail, here is the theme postcard for next year:

Dave

2005 - For the past two years, I have heard so much about the International Assembly. Well, it lived up to its hype.

My travel day yesterday was long. Fortunately, a very nice young woman switched seats with me so that I could sit in the aisle and not in the middle seat. In the terminal, I gave up my seat to her...so one good turn does deserve another.

After arriving at the hotel and settling in, we had our first event..a reception hosted by President Glenn and President Elect Carl-Wilhelm. I met folks from all over the planet..some places I never even heard about. We all come together with the same mission..Service Above Self. It's a bond that unifies all of us.

A woman grabbed me by the arm during the reception and said...I've been looking for you! ( My first thought was " What did I do now?") She is from Australia and young woman in her district has ALS ( Lou Gehrig's disease) She has two young children and they found out about this clinical trial that will be taking place in Boston over the next year. She needs to find someone to host their family in their home. I told her that I would look into it and the smile on her face made me so proud to be a Rotarian. So team....we need to host a family of 4, in the Boston area.....any ideas or suggestions, send them to me at my e mail address.

I also got a chance to meet Jaap, from District 1580 in Holland who will be our GSE host next year. We planned to sit down and arrange the schedule. We're both very excited about our GSE experience.

Well, thats all for now...I need to go work out and get ready for the first day of learning...

Dave
